Ultra Singapore 2016

It is assumed that everyone who enjoys clubbing would like Zoukout. Let me tell you that this is not the case. While I love dancing (I call it dancing, some may call it hysteria) in a club, I absolutely HATED Zoukout the one time I went.

The main reason was the sand. I HATE sand. I don’t find joy in having sand get between your toes while dancing, having to walk cautiously in case of any broken bottles/vomit and trying to avoid stepping on the unconscious bodies that would be scattered on the beach by daybreak.

So I was kinda excited when Hui Li so generously offered me her Day 2 Ultra tickets. It was Ultra’s debut in Singapore and I thought it’d be like Zoukout without the sand.. Perfect! Then I went to check it out on the website and didn’t find any familiar acts other than Above and Beyond (who I didn’t like), Sam Willows and Axwell. I was also kinda bummed when I found out it ended at 10.30pm (what kinda music festival ends so early?!). It was only after I realized who Kygo was that I got kinda hyped again.

Another reason why I was a little hesitant to go was, this is gonna sound dumb, I was afraid there would be a terrorist attack. Before you scoff, let me just say that terrorism is very real nowadays ok! And I had good reason to be afraid! Firstly, it is an event where many people from overseas would be attending. Secondly, the date of the event was Sep 11. And also, the location was just next to MBS, the rumoured spot that those terrorists from Batam wanted to bomb! But because I didn’t want to let my paranoia control my life, I decided to go ahead. And I’m alive! Thank God. Now please brace yourselves for shaky and low-quality videos.

Apparently there were alot of complaints about Day 1, which the organisers heard and corrected so Day 2 was wayyy better. We went about 6pm and the queue was short and quick, unlike what people who went for Day 1 experienced.

We went for Kygo first, but the crowd didn't seem that hyped and were not really dancing much, probably coz most of his mixes were downtempo. I loved it when he spun the more popular songs like Bulletproof, No Money and Firestone and everyone suddenly got more excited and alive. The emcee came out at the end of his set and made us sing Happy Birthday to him, which was kinda cool, because it was his birthday and he was actually born in Singapore! #SGftw

Jas was initially kinda enthu about Above and Beyond, who came out next, but after 2 songs we decided that a drink and the opportunity to rest our aching legs were far more appealing.

It was a downer when they told us the cider was still not cold, 2 hours after we first asked them. So we had to settle for beer at $12/cup.

We went back for Axwell and it was really a pleasant surprise because prior to Ultra we didn't really know what songs he produced/remixed. My two favourite moments of the night were both during the Axwell set; once when he played Satisfaction/Good Feeling and the last part where he spun Sun is Shining, which is now my new favourite song of his. He asked everyone to take out their phones and shine the flashlights so the whole atmosphere was really harmonious and warm.

I must be getting old because that 4 hours of screaming and jumping left me having a fever the next day and sore throat for a week, but that’s not gonna stop me from going to Ultra next year! Yes, it was that good. But I’ll probably just go for one of the days, if not I might end up in hospital. #oldage

P.S. I know this post came kinda late since Ultra was like more than 2 months ago, I actually started writing about it but didn’t have the time to complete it till today.. =x

Make a Difference Race 2016 – Race Pack Collection

This was the first time I signed up for a run to support the cause instead of to challenge myself. I’m only going for the 3.5 km one though, because Harriet (who so sweetly agreed to go with me) didn’t wanna jog so far. The collection of the race pack was seamless and there was no queue when I went to collect it last weekend at Millenia Walk.

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of things they gave, given that this is not a highly publicized run. It may not look like a lot but it’s more than what Sundown gave us (a big recyclable bag with tons of useless brochures inside).

The milk chocolate drink was meh, kinda diluted. But still, better than nothing! *looks at Sundown organisers accusingly* I like the shoe lights the most; super excited to wear them this Saturday!

Groupon Review: High Tea Semi-Buffet at Xperience Restaurant, Sofitel So

My bro brought me to Fullerton Landing Point for high tea on my last birthday and ever since then I’ve been hooked on the idea of having bite sized pieces of yumminess in between lunch and dinner. I’ve always loved Sofitel’s décor, so I was damn happy when I saw the deal on Groupon.

The deal
Meal for 1 person for $28.50 instead of $38
Meal for 2 people for $56.90 instead of $76

Meal includes
10 assortments of sweet and savory pastries
1 pot of tea per person

When we got there, they offered us a choice of 3 teas to choose from; Green tea, Chamomile and Mint.

The tea was brought together with a basket of fried snacks (chicken wings, spring rolls and “money bags”) as well as a three-tier dessert stand with what was supposed to be the assortment of 10 sweet and savoury pastries per person. I say that because instead of giving us 2 of each item, they gave us 18 pieces of pastries, only some with 2 of each variety. Nothing really stood out much except for the chocolate tart which was so decadent! Unfortunately, they only served one of those so we had to share.

The funny thing about the semi-buffet was that even though they listed it in the Groupon header, there was no further mention of it anywhere else on the deal page, so we were left wondering exactly what the “semi-buffet” comprised of.

From the buffet section

There was actually a small buffet corner and the items were mostly macarons, mini sandwiches and bite sized slices of cakes/pastries. Oh, and they had this mini lobster cornet which Landing Point served too! We liked that, but it was gone from the buffet table quite fast without any refills as they were almost closing up when we reached.

I'd say that it is pretty worth to get the Groupon, quantity wise. But if you're looking for prettier and tastier food, this wouldn't be the best bet.

Kdrama of the Moment: [W]

I didn't expect that I'd blog another post about a kdrama so soon after the last one, but then again I am watching 4 kdramas concurrently.

I know I say this ALOT but [W] is possibly one of the best kdramas I've ever watched! I know this because I am so focused on the show when I watch it that I don't think of anything else at all. Like, really, it's just mind-blowing. And also, there have been times when I realised my mouth was open halfway through the show. Not exaggerating.

The show is about how a daughter of a webtoon artist gets sucked into the webtoon and meets the main character of the comic named, you guessed it, [W]. I'm not a crazy fan of Lee Jong Suk, though I know many people are, but I'm starting to see his appeal in this show, even more so than in [Pinocchio] and I did like that show a lot too. His acting is totally on point here, possibly due to the awesome script as well. Han Hyo Joo [Shining Inheritance] is the female lead and I adore her for her initial empathy/humanity and the way she acts like a total fangirl sometimes!

I got hooked from the first episode and have been nail-bitingly anxious while waiting for the next episode to be out! The last time I felt so excited about a drama was [Remember] earlier this year so hopefully the writers don't disappoint with the ending!

The California Fitness Saga

California Fitness has always had a bad reputation for hard-selling and poor customer service. However, the fees were really affordable compared to other gyms and being approached bugged by a salesperson/Personal Trainer every once in awhile was a tradeoff I was willing to make in exchange for cheap membership fees.

I enjoyed using the gym for the past 2 years without any major issues, but here’s how it all went downhill this year.

15 Feb – Taka branch closes, giving members a 10 days advance notice.

12 Jul – All 12 California Fitness branches in HK closes. Worried members, including myself, started texting our Sales Consultant and they assured us that California Fitness SG operates separately and independently. The company issued a statement to The Straits Times stating the exact same thing.

16 Jul –
The Raffles branch “closed till further notice”. Bugis branch was out of towels. Accusations were coming in so fast on their Facebook page that they did not have time to delete all of them.

17 Jul - A Facebook Group was created to discuss alternate gyms. From there, a Whatsapp group chat with currently more than 40 pax was initiated on how to get refunds. Finally, another Facebook Group was created on what we should do IF the gym closes.

18 Jul – I went to Bugis for Bodycombat. Saying that it was packed would be an understatement. I didn't get a good photo but another member did.

I could barely squeeze in and it was suffocating. I am not joking when I say that I felt breathless many times during the session even though they left the doors open. The aircon did not seem to be working well also. BUT I really must say that the trainers (Toshi, Christina and a guy) were commendable! They didn't know what was gonna happen but they all seemed very upset and everyone was hugging and taking photos. I was surprised that I actually felt a little sad about the impending doom of the place. In usual BC style, they motivated all the way till the end, with the trainer saying,"When we fall down, we'll get up again! That's the BC spirit!". I assumed he was talking about the closure.

They were out of toiletries and towels too.

19 Jul - Members grew more frenzied. Reporters asked to speak to us. Speculations were flying all around till 11.30pm when most of us got the news that they were closing. It was officially announced at midnight.

Today, more discussions were made on how to get a refund or at least get the gym running again. One of the members explained that provisional liquidation meant there's still a shot for someone to buy over the company. It's a long shot but if all of us agree to fork out a little extra a month, it may be possible.

I'm trying to do whatever is possible to get my money's worth but if nothing can be done, I'll just take it as I paid a higher monthly premium for the fees. Let it go~

But seriously, this guy though.

He listed this on Carousell TODAY. Not sure if he was trying to be funny but he got exposed almost immediately.

Nice try, bro.

Kdrama of the Moment: [Doctors]

I was feeling really crappy last night, probably due to not having slept the previous night and instead of doing what normal people would do and catch up on sleep, I decided to make myself feel happier by starting on a new kdrama and binge eating.

So many people have raved about [Doctors] so I was quite excited and the first episode did not fail me! I love it when I'm already familiar with the cast as opposed to slowly growing to like/dislike them after watching a few episodes and it definitely helped that I liked all 4 leads.

There’s Park Shin Hye (You’re Beautiful, The Heirs, Pinocchio), Kim Rae Won (Punch), Lee Sung Kyung (It’s Okay, It’s Love, Cheese in a Trap) and Yoon Gyun Sung (Pinnochio). I like the 2 girls more though.. PSH is just too awesome in this show!! In fact, I think she’s the main reason why I like it so much. She has more character in her pinky than Song Hye Kyo had in DOTS (Yes, I did not think that show was that fantastic).

She beat up 3 groups of people in the first episode alone, out of which 2 of those groups were some other catty girls. That girl can fight, she kicked their asses in a club, something I always wanted to do when I was younger. Kinda. The point is, THAT GIRL CAN FIGHT. She made me wanna go learn MMA, or at least go for my Bodycombat class.

I’m assuming that they are showing the backstory in these first few episodes and she’s the rebellious student who’s hurting inside coz mummy died and daddy can’t take her antics anymore. She gets sent off to grandma, who is pretty badass herself (in a really charming way).

I’m still on the fence about the romance with Kim Rae Won, given their student-teacher relationship in the show, but I like their interactions so far and am guessing he’ll probably teach her to be a better person and all that.

Hopefully the rest of the drama delivers and gives me a good plot to get lost in.

Groupon Review: O-An Japanese Restaurant

I love Jap food so when I saw this deal for a TEN COURSE meal, I immediately bought it! As usual, I didn’t read the deal properly and thought that each person would be getting 10 courses, however it was 10 courses for 2 pax, which was a blessing in disguise coz I think the 10 courses could’ve fed 3 people!

The deal
Meal for 2 people for $34.80 instead of $70
Meal for 4 people for $69.60 instead of $140
Meal for 6 people for $136.80 instead of $280

Every 2 people get
Edamame
Daily salad
Grilled saba fish
Tori karaage (deep-fried chicken)
Agedashi tofu
Sashimi
Temaki handroll
Tempura
Sukiyaki hot pot or shabu shabu (pork or beef)
Tonkotsu ramen

Edamame

Grilled Saba Fish

I know this looks very dry but it was moist inside and was actually not bad!

Tori Karaage

I didn't eat this but Jace says it was nice, probably as nice as any karaage can get?

Agedashi Tofu

This is one of my favourite Jap dishes, however it's hard to find a place that can cook it really well as most of them just end up soggy and a little slimy. This was no different.

Sashimi

There were actually 4 pieces but I ate 2 before taking the photo. :P The sashimi was fresh enough for my liking, but disclaimer again.. I'm easily contented when it comes to food (and movies, and alot of other things actually).

Temaki Handroll

Tastes exactly how it looks in that photo. Meh.

Tempura

Erm ya, I know this is a REALLY bad photo but I had the prawn tempura and she had the sweet potato and we were both happy. :D

Tonkatsu Ramen

This was one of the most substandard ramen I had ever eaten. Looks yummy and all but the broth was bland and the noodles like instant noodles. The pork was good though.

Sukiyaki Hotpot

As comforting as a hot pot should be. Jace said the beef was good too!

I didn't take a photo of the salad coz it was nothing much to look at. Plus I was very hungry and just wanted to eat. So ya, sorry some of the photos look abit shitty. =x But the salad of the day was pasta salad and it was actually quite nice.

Overall, I'd say that $34.80 for 2 pax is worth the price! Just don't expect super quality food. This is actually a long overdue post (most of my posts are), I went there about 3 months ago but as luck would have it, the Groupon is still ongoing!

Restaurant Week: The Salon at Hotel Fort Canning

The latest edition of Restaurant Week was from 19 - 26 March and the theme was "Feasts of the Ocean", so more restaurants focused on seafood this time around.

I went to The Salon with my fav boy and the ambience was pretty much like any other hotel restaurant.

 Asparagus Soup with Fresh Mussel

They were not kidding when they said mussel (singular). When the server came, he brought the plate (I say plate coz it was wayyyy too shallow to be a bowl) with the lone piece of mussel and asparagus, without the soup. Then he carried a small teapot over and poured the soup into the plate/bowl fancifully. Loved the fanfare and the soup was nice enough but the serving was kinda pitiable.

Normal price: $12

 Crispy Cuttlefish Fritter

I didn't expect much from this dish because the way they named it was so boring (Cuttlefish? Meh. Calamari? Yummy!), but it was actually my favourite dish that night. It was crispy outside and soft inside, just like how good calamari should taste!

Normal price: Not in menu

 Pan-Seared Salmon with Caviar

Very satisfied with this! It was just nice, a little tender on the inside. The serving size was adequate as well.

Normal price: $24 (The salmon on the menu is with a different kind of sauce)

 Slipper Lobster Angel Hair Pasta

They tried to make this fusion and added some spicy coriander and tomato sauce to it. I don't like chilli so I may be abit biased but he also wasn't very impressed. The sauce just felt abit off with angel hair pasta, it may have been more suitable for rice maybe?

Normal price: $17 (Average pasta price as this was not in the menu either)

Orange and Cardamom Crème Brulee

Crème brulee is one of my favourite desserts so this was a good end to the meal! The ice cream was salted vanilla and they had some biscuit bits and seaweed at the side which blended surprisingly well with the ice cream. Just wish the caramelised sugar on the crème brulee could've been a little thicker and more evenly spread as some of the outer edges of the top part were missed out. Oh, and if you're wondering if the little dough-looking item at the extreme right can be eaten.. It can't. Almost ate it but thankfully we decided to check with Grace, the waitress (First name basis with the waitress, yo! She was super warm and friendly throughout the entire meal), first and realised it was just a decoration.

Normal price: $10 (Average dessert price, this was not on the menu either)

Hmm, calculating the more expensive items we only saved $8++. But then again, it's not really a good gauge since alot of the items weren't really on the menu. The experience as a whole was good but going for lunch would be alot more worth it as it's $10 less for the same dishes.

Horror-scopes

Happy belated Chinese New Year guys! I know this post came a little very late (I planned to post it on the last few days of CNY) but it was the time of the year when people binged on pineapple tarts, gave/received ang baos and endured hours of loud CNY songs.. Who had time to blog?! (Ok, apparently a lot of people still did so it was just me being lazy.)

Another common thing done during CNY would be to check out the yearly fortune according to zodiac signs. I never believed in horoscopes because the idea that your whole life is already planned out based on the date and time you were born is just a concept too ridiculous to me. Let me count the ways..

1.  Too many different types

There are actually many other different kinds of astrology, but these 2 are the more common ones.. The normal horoscope and the Chinese zodiac horoscope.. Which one should you follow? What if they clash? For example, I’m a Libra and also an Ox. What if my Libra horoscope says my lucky colour is red and my Ox one states that it’s blue? Should I just mix it up and wear purple?

      2. The readings are way too generic.

Here are 2 examples of the Ox horoscope this year.

“Those who are employed will either be helped by a benefactor, receive compliments from superiors or be promoted.”

Ok, the promotion part is pretty straightforward and probably has the lowest probability to happen out of the 3.

About being helped by a benefactor.. The definition of benefactor is generally someone who helps someone else so basically this is saying that out of the 365 days in the entire year, there will be a day that someone helps you. Great prediction!

And receiving compliments from superiors.. All I can say is, if your superior doesn’t even compliment you once in an entire year, you should be thinking twice about your job and I don’t need to read the stars to tell you that.

Now I’m confused! Is my lucky number 5502 or 3 and 7?

Oh, this one is even more laughable. Not sure if it’s a horoscope reading or a help board for people with no common sense.

“If you are able to plan your financial wisely, you will be able to see a satisfactory amount in your account.” Thanks for the advice, I never knew I would be able to see a satisfactory amount in my account if I could plan my finances properly! How lucky am I to be born in the year of the Ox?

“Those who are married should avoid getting into extra-marital relationship which could ruin your family.” Please note that this is only for people who are born in the year of the Ox. Those who aren’t, lucky you! You can go ahead to have extra-marital relationships which won’t ruin your family.

“It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.” No shit.

       3. Only God knows.
I believe that only God has full control over the future, not some stars (which he created too).  And the most awesome part is that he gives us free will, so our future is definitely not written in the stars!

       4. Wiki says it best.

Yes, I know Wikipedia is a page that anyone can contribute to or edit, but there are references to support what is being published!

"No scientific studies have shown support for the accuracy of horoscopes, and the methods used to make interpretations are generally considered pseudo-scientific. In modern scientific framework no known interaction exists that could be responsible for the transmission of the alleged influence between a person and the position of stars in the sky at the moment of birth. Besides, all tests done so far, keeping strict methods to include a control group and proper blinding between experimenters and subjects have shown no effect beyond pure chance. Further, some psychological tests have shown that it is possible to construct personality descriptions and foretelling generic enough to satisfy most members of a large audience simultaneously. This is usually referred to as the Forer or Barnum effect."

So yes, sometimes I do read horoscopes for fun and to be amused by how wrong/ridiculous they are, but I’m not gonna be affected or live my life according to the positioning of stars.

Not Your Typical Taipei Trip

How do you go on a holiday to a country known for its yummy food and not put on (too much) weight? Climb their mountains and be rewarded with a good workout and a breathtaking view!

Most people know Taipei as the destination you go to for cheap and good food and shopping, but the scenery there is awesome as well, and I’m not just talking about the usual tourist spots like jiufen and shifen, which I would still recommend a visit to for first time visitors.

My recent trip to Taipei was for the brother’s birthday celebration and he decided to thank me for it by making sure I don’t grow fatter after binging on all those street snacks. Hence, the mountain-climbing itinerary.

Xiangshan (象山)
This was the first and supposedly easiest climb of the 3 mountains we were trekking. In my head, I expected mountain climbing to be on grass with no footpaths so I was pleasantly surprised that there were steps. The not so pleasant part was that they were REALLY steep and narrow so I had to balance feeling tired and being terrified that I may just slip and roll to my death at any moment. I hope this explains why I don’t have any photos other than at the start and end of the climb.

Though it was about 8pm when we reached, there were still a good number of people there and the amazing thing is they all seemed to have such great stamina, from the elderly to young kids of about 5 years old, going up and down the steps fearlessly and with such ease that I felt ashamed. Ok, actually I didn't feel ashamed but my brother was grumbling all the way about how I should be. I seemed to be the only one panting other than another Korean girl who lagged behind her friend.

After around 15 minutes of climbing, there was a rest area with seats and we had a preview of the sight that awaited us once we reached the top.

We started climbing again after resting awhile and were rewarded with an amazing night view of Taipei’s city at the top of the mountain.

The best time to go there would definitely be just before sunset, so you get to enjoy both the day and night view.

Directions
Take the MRT to Xiangshan Station, leave from Exit 2 and continue walking along the park. At the end of this road, turn left and continue walking straight until the entrance for Xiangshan Hiking Trail (the first photo).

Mount Keelung
We didn’t manage to go far on this one because we took like 10 steps and it started raining pouring. Thank God that the rain started early and not when we were halfway up the mountain without shelter!

Anyway, the plan was to hike Mount Keelung first, then walk around Jiufen for awhile before heading to Miaokou night market. We were bummed that we didn’t manage to follow through due to the downpour and ended up just wandering around Jiufen.

Directions
From Taipei Main Station, walk to Taipei Railway Station and take the train to Ruifang Station. Exit the Ruifang Train Station and turn left staying on the busy street right in front of the train station. Staying on the right hand side of the street keep walking straight until you pass a police station. The bus stop is located a little past the police station, take bus 788 or 1062 and stop at “Jiufen Old Street”. Simply walk a little further up the hill once you alight the bus and you will see the entrance to the Mount Keelung trail.

Yangmingshan (陽明)
Yangmingshan is actually a national park and there are many different trails to explore, so it might get a little complicated. My advice is that you head to the Visitor’s Centre and decide which trail you wish to explore from there. My brother had been there before, so he brought us on the Miaopu trail to Mount Qixing, which is the highest mountain in Taipei at 1120m.

There are a few important things to note before you decide to go on this trail. Firstly, bring plenty of water! 5 bottles of 500ml mineral water was barely enough for 3 people (the dongsaeng was in Taipei too and joined us for the climb), so I suggest you bring at least 1 litre each. Next, definitely wear sports shoes for better friction as the terrain is rocky and uneven. I would also recommend that you wear sports attire as you would be sweating A LOT. Lastly, please don’t go wandering off the trail path as there have been sightings of snakes. And the last thing you want while climbing up the tallest mountain in Taipei is to get bitten by a snake. Okay, maybe the second last thing, after spraining your ankle.

They have these markers throughout the trail so you’d know how long more you need to suffer. At the halfway mark, we were already damn shagged, even though we stopped for a few breaks before that. There were another 3 Singaporeans we kept bumping into as we would keep overtaking one another while either of our groups were taking a break. We made small talk with them and tried to keep up in a friendly competition.

The steps there were all very inconsistent; some parts were rocky and uneven while some parts had actual man-made stairs. I was glad I hiked Mount Xiangshan first for “training” as the steps on Yang Ming Shan weren’t as steep as the ones there.

The part we loved most. Flat ground! This was almost at the top already.

Finally at the top! We took about 1.5 hours to reach the top and stayed there for about half an hour, just admiring the view and watching the clouds go past.

We headed down by a different path and went to the Menghuan pond before finally ending off with the FREE hot spring foot bath at Lengshuikeng.

The first point is a warning about aforementioned snakes

I totally wanted to turn back after seeing the above sign, but my bro rolled his eyes and mocked me for being such a girl about it.

Please forgive the lousy photo quality from my previous crappy, half-broken phone.

I was quite insistent on going to the hot springs 'coz it was free! They also had a bath area (separated by gender) which was free but the idea of getting naked and sharing a public bath with strangers did NOT appeal to me.

All in all, the view alone was totally worth the time and effort taken to climb the mountain and I’d do it again if I had the chance, perhaps on a different trail the next time.

Directions
I would really recommend taking a cab there, as it would roughly take about 2 hours from Ximending by public transport. The cab fare was about S$20, so if your group consists of 3 or more, taking a cab would definitely be worth it and save the hassle! However, if you have a lot of time and are on a budget, take the MRT to Jiantan and exit through Exit 1. Walk to the bus station on the left and take bus R5 to Yangmingshan station. From there, you can take Bus 108 to the Tourist Center.

Groupon Review: toTTful Cafe

Bought this deal as the location was near my church and I thought it'd be a more cafe-like atmosphere, however when I reached the place I was a little disappointed 'coz it looked pretty tacky, just a small space and they even had a menu of local food stuck on the glass outside. Not that I don't like local food (I like ALL food, just that local is not on top of my list), but it just didn't match my expectation of a cafe.

The deal

  • $13.80 for a $25 cash voucher (minimum 2 pax)
  • $27.60 for a $50 cash voucher (minimum 4 pax)

  •  Menu

I went with my family and the food took forever to come, but the friendly and efficient servers made up for it. When the food was finally served, all complaints disappeared. It was so good!

Dad: "The chef must have been from a hotel previously."
Bro: "Even without the Groupon, it's damn worth it!"
    Mum: (Quietly eating)

Anyway, I was too hungry to take photos the first time so here's what we ordered when I went back again with my friends.

    Bacon and Mushroom De Pink

    Grilled Chicken Chop

    Ribeye Steak

    Lamb Loin

    Paprika Grilled Chicken

I had the steak both times and the doneness (medium well) was just nice! The lamb was soft and easy to chew, not like those you have to chew for ages and then spit out because it's just too tough. The spaghetti was yummy without being too rich. Ok, basically I liked everything there! Oh, did I forget to mention.. They do not charge GST and service charge! How awesome is that?

I already bought more vouchers to go back again! The deal is still on, link below if you're interested!
